About Susan Welton
Hi, We’re Walter and Susan , and we welcome you to our island (Well, it’s not our island. We don’t own it; it’s far too large.) Having been residents of Big Island before Kona had a single stoplight and nothing stayed open past 5pm, we’ve watched our town grow and change. Thankfully it remains as charming and full of the Aloha Spirit as it did when we moved here in 1979 (with a few extra amenities). Walter spent his career as a contractor building high-end custom homes for happy clients and Susan spent her career flying high in the friendly skies as a flight attendant for United Airlines. Over the past 30 years we have built countless numbers of our own homes together, and we wanted to combine that building expertise and our love for travel and adventure to create the ideal vacation home in paradise. Walter has a great talent for creating beautiful, well-crafted spaces and Susan is a master at making a house a home. Together we know staying at Kona Sunset Hale will be the experience of your lifetime. It is our aim to make you feel as though you’ve come to stay with friends. There is nothing quite like the Land of Aloha, and we are so excited to welcome you to it. Aloha, Walt & Sue
Why Susan Welton chose Kailua Kona
Its a funny story - We tried to sell it twice, it kept coming back. So, we got the message and decided to build on it instead. But since we already had a home we like, we chose to build one for you. It was completed in 2014, with NEW almost everything. This property is magical, come see for yourselves. VERY IMPORTANT: Please understand that we are in a quiet residential neighborhood and all noise needs to be brought inside the house by 10PM as a courtesy to the neighbors. ALSO.. this property has been rented to you .. large parties are not allowed. Please feel free to talk with us about this if you would like.
What makes this House unique
Concierge Service Available. We have traveled extensively and know what is important to the traveler, so we bought you new pillow top beds in all rooms, flat screen tv's in all rooms with free wifi, and netflix in the living room. We have built a kitchen that wants for nothing, You will have a solar heated saltwater pool to float and play in, a fenced Private yard surrounded with tropical plantings. There are No stairs, not even into the house from the porticache. Panoramic Ocean View.. It IS truly amazing. 5 minutes from Kailua town - VERY centrally located. Close enough - yet the feel of being far away.

Great Stay at Kona Sunset Hale
We just finished staying at Kona Sunset Hale and this rental is by far the best VRBO experience we've ever had. The pictures on the VRBO website are spot on. It's a beautiful well appointed and managed home in a great location. Sue and Walt were wonderful hosts, checking in periodically and offering suggestions without being at all intrusive. There are a couple of great notebooks with ideas for things to do from Sue and Walt as well as many of their previous guests. If we ever visit the Big Island again, this is going to be the first place we look for. Thanks Sue and Walt for being such wonderful hosts.
What a wonderful property in superb location. The photos don’t do it full justice- it has breathtaking views and every comfort catered for. It really made our trip something special and I would truly love to return one day. Hosts were wonderful too. Thanks so much
From the moment we opened the door of Kona Sunset Hale, we were blown away. The views were absolutely breathtaking and the house is situated on the property in such a way that you get to look out on the ocean from the moment you open your eyes in the morning until you go to sleep at night. We are a group of two adult couples and two kids travelling for a much needed retreat, which is exactly what we got. The kids especially loved the pool and it was easy to watch them play from the comfortable patio furniture. Susan and Walter have equipped the house with everything you need: we had pool toys, snorkeling gear, a cooler for day trips, a completely stocked kitchen, and everything in between. We cooked lots of meals at the house and took advantage of the conveniently located grocery stores. When we decided we wanted to go into town for meals or shopping, it was just a 5 minute drive. Susan and Walter were the best hosts, providing us with all the information we needed and lots of fresh mangos! We can't wait to go back!
Amazing home in the perfect spot!
This home is simply awesome. Amazing views of Kailua and the bay. We made sure to be back every evening to catch the sunset from the pool. The house is clean, well equipped, and was a highlight of our trip. Two master suites on opposite ends of the house are perfect for vacationing couples. The house will also work well for families. There is an additional bedroom with two twins (could be pushed together to make a queen) and more sleeping options in the living room. It's private and quiet and we all slept well! There are fans for the muggy nights, but just opened up the windows and let in a nice evening breeze. We spent a lot time outside on the lanai as well, it's expansive and has lots of places to sit. The house is also well equipped for the beach with 5 sand chairs, two umbrellas, boogie boards and snorkel masks! At the time of our arrival, the cabinets in the kitchen were well stocked with cooking spices and salt and pepper. Susan was awesome and helpful, she greeted us with fresh fruit and even brought us an amazing white pineapple. We are already looking forward to the next time we can visit. Highly Recommended!
Another great stay!
This is our 3rd stay at the Kona Sunset Hale ... every time we walk in the door, I’m just amazed at this house. There is nothing like waking up that first morning with the breezes blowing and seeing that amazing view of the ocean right from the bed. Sue and Walt have thought of everything here. You have the best view of the nightly sunsets from their back lanai and the pool is a fantastic place to relax after a day of exploring the Big Island. There is not a better spot to stay and we can’t wait to return!
MAHALO!! We love it when you are our "neighbors".
Sue and Walt
Three couples just spent 8 glorious nights at Kona sunset hale. The house was even better than the pictures if that’s possible. The bedrooms were perfect for three couples. Plenty of room in living room and dinning area. The backyard was absolutely beautiful with the biggest Linai . Sue and Walt thought of everything to make our vacation perfect. We were fortunate to have some of the delicious papayas mangos and the yummy white pineapple 🍍. They had all the pool toys along with beach chairs umbrella etc. The house is in a fantastic location. Close to Costco, town and supermatkets😀😀 I wish i was back there now🌴🌴
We enjoy 21 of the 23 climates in the world, which presents us with multitudes of choices every day. From snowboarding/skiiing on top of Mauna Kea to swimming with the mantas.. All in one day if you wish. We often experience the red lava flow of Kileauea Volcano, strolling through a lava tube, and hiking the surrounding area. The waterfalls are refreshing and can be seen from Akaka Falls to Waipio Valley. You can plant yourselves on a black sand beach along side the turtles who rest there daily. Golf, golf. and more golf. The west side of the Big island is a golfers paradise. Courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and others of his notoriety. Challenging at times but always filled with the beauty of the ocean and the mountains.
Hungry? We have the flavors from the most renowned chefs to the best ' local style' foods. A luau is a must do just to experience the tastes of the islands. Our beaches are like no others we have ever seen. Many are hidden from view, so you will not find them crowded with people, instead you will find turtles ( honus) resting, palm trees swaying, and a pool of aqua warm water waiting your arrival. The Big Island is a surfers dream. We have summer spots brought from the south and winter spots brought by the north. There are beginner breaks and breaks for those without fear. We also have a terrific surf lesson beach for those of you who want to give it a try.
We have hiking, biking, running, walking, for all levels.
I really can't think of anything we don't have... except snakes.
Which is a good thing, especially when you are on that that treacherous forest trail. :) Please enjoy our island, you will marvel at the calmness and beauty offered to you while you are here... its called 'Aloha Spirit' We look forward to meeting you.
